Make a Boat from Nature
We challenge you to use natural resources to make a toy boat or raft and then to float it down a stream, or in a pond.
You could use things like harakeke, tī kōuka leaves, sticks, bark, or bamboo. Harakeke is a great resource, as the leaves are strong and easy to weave. The seed heads are on long sticks that are light and easy to carve or make holes in. The leaves even provide fibres that can be used to tie things together. The boat in this photo was made by a seven year old who used nothing but bamboo skewers and harakeke.
We would love to see what creative designs you can come up with using the natural resources around you!
Here’s a great nature connector about floating sticks down a river that you might find fun to combine with this activity.
Here’s a nature connector about how to make a tī kōuka basket. This could easily be a boat too!
