Alphabet Scavenger Hunt
Find objects in nature that start with each letter of the alphabet, or with different sounds.
Get your children to write out the alphabet on a piece of paper (one letter at the start of each line), or print off our Alphabet Nature Hunt. Then head outside to find something that starts with each letter of the alphabet. They can write what they find beside the letter. This could be done individually, or in pairs/groups. It might be tricky to find something for every letter (‘X’ might be a challenge!), but the children can see how many letters they can find items for.

For preschoolers, who can’t write yet, play this game with sounds. Walk around the garden with them and challenge them to find something that starts with a certain letter sound. They can see how many things they can spot to tell you. Then try another letter sound.
Extra activity: If your children enjoyed this activity and wanted to play again here’s an alternative. Give them one letter and see how many things they can spot that begin with that letter. E.g. B- butterfly, bush, bug, bike, blackbird…
Or, make it really tricky!
-Find things ending in these letters…
-Find things starting with these blends… (e.g. sh, ch, tr, dr)
This is a great activity to link nature with phonics work or spelling.
