Make a Bird Feeder
It’s great to plant trees or shrubs in your garden that attract birds. However, having a bird feeder will allow you to provide feed at times of year when birds can’t find enough food in their natural habitat. It may also attract different species of birds to your garden. It’s lots of fun to experiment with different feeders and different foods to see what birds you can spot in your backyard. Watch this video for inspiration, they make several different types of feeders and give you great information about making bird feeders for New Zealand birds. There are printable Instructions HERE for making a simple bird feeder too.
HERE is a link to our Nature Connector with instructions for making a range of wooden bird feeders, for those who would like a construction project!
After making your bird feeder, sit quietly in your garden (or watch through a window). What birds do you notice visiting your feeder? Do you know the names of all the birds that you can see? If you’re not sure of one of them, look carefully and notice the colour of the eyes, beak and feathers. What size is it? What shape is its head, beak, body? How long is its tail? Does it have any unusual markings? Go to BIRDS ONLINE and click on the ‘Identify that bird tab’. Follow the instructions and see if you can find a photo that matches your bird.
How many different birds can you spot? Were there any birds that you have not noticed before? Are they native or introduced? Let us know what species you discovered.
