Make your own Compass
You can buy cheap compasses for only a couple of dollars and have lots of fun with them. Go outside and give each other directions to certain items and see if you can use the compasses to follow the directions. e.g. “Go north until you get to the fence and then go east until you get to the tree. Go south west from the tree and see what you find.”
To learn about how compasses work watch this video. Then challenge yourself to make your own compass using a needle and magnet. The video below has directions on how to do it. You can just rub the needle one way with the magnet for a couple of minutes. Then place it on something that allows it to float in water. This could be a leaf, cork, bottle top, or piece of paper. It should point north. Compare it with your bought compass and see if it’s correct.
