Watch this video to learn all about how fossils are formed. Then read the instructions below to see how to make your own fossils by making impressions in clay or dough with natural objects.
To take this activity a step further, you can fill the impression with plaster of paris, let it set, and then peel the clay off to reveal your fossil. This is a good way to demonstrate how the impression made by an animal that decomposes in mud, can fill with sediment that eventually turns to rock to form a fossil. We did this activity with salt dough shaped like a bowl. We made an impression in the salt dough bowl with a toy dinosaur, and then filled it with plaster of paris. We also did this successfully with play dough. Check out our fossils below!
