Make a lure
This is a really simple, fun activity for tamariki of any age who have a trap or a trapline. Allow them to be creative! You can add anything you like to a lure and then see what works!
A lure is used to attract predators to a trap. Generally the lure is white, as this attracts our nocturnal predators such as rats and possums.
Start with a mix of one part icing sugar and about five parts flour (you can add add milk powder too), then add some flavours, scents or spices. You can try essences (e.g. vanilla, berry or peach), fish oil, cinnamon, curry powder… Think about what smell might attract a predator. Mix up your lure concoction. We find it easy to make it in an ice-cream container, then to put the lid on and give it a good shake.
Make a trail of lure on the ground leading to your rat trap, or up the trunk of the tree, leading to your possum trap. Do not put the lure inside the trap, as it might go mouldy and could jam your trap.
