Opepe Forest Scavenger Hunts
There are so many interesting plants to spot at Opepe! It is our favourite area of bush in Taupō with its giant ancient trees, and lush understory. You can see the twisted trunks of kōtukutuku, with their bright red flaky bark, all the way along the path. At the right time of year (Term 4), you can spot their flowers on the path, green/purple if they are unpollinated and pink/red after pollination. In Term 1 you may even find the edible berries! Learn more about kōtukutuku here.
The challenge below was designed especially for children visiting Opepe, by KGT kids. It includes all of their favourite things to do there. Can you find the massive rimu tree pictured and stop to explore its huge roots? Can you find the hollow matai tree and look inside it? Can you find a puriri moth hole in a putaputaweta tree?
