Paper Plane Competition
Making and flying paper planes is fun and a great activity to do outside in nature for children (or adults) of any age!
There is so much learning that happens in holding a paper plane competition. As a teacher, it is a really easy activity to make into a whole day integrated unit.
Literacy: Following instructions and making the planes is a fantastic reading activity. Write your own instructions for your plane design for procedural writing, write similes about the different planes flying, or write a reflection on the activity.
Numeracy: Decorate the planes with a symmetrical design and learn about reflection and symmetry. When you hold your competition it is a great chance to learn about estimating. Estimate how far you think your plane will fly, make a prediction and then measure how far it went. Graphing data and comparing the flights of different planes is all wonderful maths too. In fact, NZ maths have a fantastic unit all about paper planes. It includes measurement and statistics. Click HERE to see this.
STEM: Designing your own plane, adjusting the design and improving it to get it to fly better is all fantastic technology and science.
Who would have thought that a fun activity outside could involve so much learning!
