Write a Nature Poem

Using similes and metaphors in nature:

Now go for a nature walk and use similes or metaphors to describe what you see. Collect some autumn leaves and think of similes to describe them. Glue your leaf to a piece of paper and write similes about it around it, or take a photo of your leaf and make a pic collage of your leaf and the similes/metaphors.

A simile describes something by comparing it using the word 'like' or 'as':

e.g.  "My leaf is orange like a roaring fire with edges that are as sharp as teeth."

"My leaf is like a swordfish, the stick is like its tail"

"My leaf is as red as a tomato.  It's shaped like a star"

A metaphor is when you describe something by saying that it is something else (without the like or as):

e.g. "The tree is a giant, reaching for the sky. It's branches are claws trying to grab the candyfloss clouds. The seeds are fairies floating off to a faraway land."
