Grow Sunflowers
There is something pretty special about watching a giant sunflower grow from a little seed. Plant some seeds and watch them sprout, grow and eventually bloom. Then complete the cycle by keeping the seeds to plant again!
Hold a sunflower growing competition with friends, family or classmates! You might need to research how to make your sunflowers grow the tallest. Trial different fertilisers to see what works best and remember to water your sunflower regularly. You might need to stake it to protect it from being blown over in the wind too.
Measure your sunflower each day and graph its progress!
For teachers:
Planting sunflower seeds at the end of Term 3 can lead to so much learning. You can integrate science, inquiry, maths (statistics and measurement), art, reading (research) and writing into a sunflower inquiry unit. They grow fast enough that you can plot their growth every couple of days on a graph. Why not get your students to trial different fertilisers and see which one is most successful?
Here’s a great New Zealand read aloud about sunflowers, ‘Sunflowers don’t grow in Winter’ by Emily Holdaway, Wildling Books.
