Nature Art Series
Attendees to Project Tongariro Mahi Aroha Nature Art Series with Sue Graham - Artist at Wildwood Gallery spent a day at Turangi ArtWorks Inc. painting their inspiring surroundings. Sue summed up the day beautifully, "What's braver than tramping up a steep mountain, cleverer than spying a shy NZ native bird in the forest? It's putting your heart and soul onto paper with watercolour paints like these colourful characters did at the Mahi Aroha Nature Art workshops yesterday!”
The workshops continued in Taupō covering birds, fungi, flowers, and the changing of the seasons. Every attendee walked away with their own personal art work. One attendee said, “[I] loved the class, so good to have success at something I didn’t think I would and come away with a new insight into how to paint birds.” Most the workshops are a combination of ages where the young can help develop the skills of the participants by showing them how to let go and express freely through their artwork.
This year we had an evening workshop only for adults to gain a bit of creative time. It seemed to hit the mark with an attendee stating, “Sue drove a welcoming atmosphere where I felt I was in an environment of no judgement. It was a great workshop to unwind, relax and just create.” Sue herself enjoyed herself saying, “Last night's "4 Seasons in NZ" Nature Art evening class had such a lively vibe! Adults relaxing, chatting about their favourite seasons, flora, birds and landscapes, sipping on wine, and even though they are adults, they painted freely and expressively like they were 10 years old and that's exactly the way to create these lovely, loose, glowing watercolours of our treasured NZ natural environment!
Big thanks to Taupō EEC and Kids Greening Taupo for organising the classes, to Taupō District Council for the Creative Arts funding, Alan and Hilltop School for the great venue, and of course to Sue for running these awesome sessions.
