Climate Change Workshops with Sophie Handford
Over these past two days we have been taken on an inspiring and hope-filled journey of learning about climate change, youth empowerment and activism with Sophie Handford.
Yesterday we welcomed local kaiako to a professional development session focusing on ways to support students' learning, ways to develop deeper connections to papatūānuku, and to empower students to take action and to speak up. We were so excited to see kaiako from across the district as well as two teachers who came all the way from Hamilton to take part!
In the evening our Kids Greening Taupō Student Leadership Team were able to spend a couple of hours learning about the impacts of, and solutions for climate change, as well as having the chance to ask lots of deep questions.
Today, we had a 4hr workshop with 30 students from multiple local schools. Students were not only able to learn the deeper science behind climate change, but to focus a considerable amount of time on what we as individuals and communities can do to help reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. Students even took part in their own small planting at the Taupo Community Gardens to help start them on their journey to lowering their carbon footprint.
Over these sessions we were able to empower students to see themselves not only as an individuals taking action, being kaitiaki for the taiao and making change, but to look deeper into the greater movements fueled by collaboration and shared passion.
The kōrero shared over these two days has been incredible, and we cannot wait to see what these students and teachers go on to implement thanks to Sophie's wisdom.
