Laughton Kindergarten Visit
We've been having fun at Laughton Kindergarten doing something a bit different lately. The children were interested in making mountains and rivers in the sandpit, so we showed them how calderas, like Lake Taupo, are formed using a balloon as a magma chamber. See instructions for this cool experiment below. The foam on the water led to discussions around how bubbly lava turns into pumice and we experimented with floating and sinking pumice and obsidian. This play led to an interest in rocks and fossils, so last week we made our own fossils (using playdough and plaster of Paris) and broke rocks from Kiritehere beach open to find real fossils! The tamariki learnt so much through this fun play. Check out the links below to learn more.
