Start Composting
Watch this video as a beginner’s guide to get you started.
Why should we compost?
Composting is such an awesome thing to do for so many reasons. You can cut down on your organic waste going to landfill, which cuts down on methane emissions. A huge percentage of our household waste is food waste and paper, which can all be composted. It might surprise you to hear that in many modern landfills these things don’t decompose, as they are capped and have no air circulating, thus no bugs or microorganisms to help break them down. They will be in landfill forever! Watch Savvy’s very cool video to learn more about this.
Your compost can also provide an awesome habitat for bugs and worms. Watch the video about ‘Yucky Bugs’ to see Bug Man, Ruud Kleinpaste investigate bugs in a compost bin. See our nature connector about worms to learn more about them.
Also, your compost will give back to you! It will provide you with lots of nutrients to put into your veggie garden, thus completing the cycle of zero waste in nature. How cool is that!
An example of hot composting from Kererū School
Clever students at Kererū School in the Hawkes Bay had fun making hot compost to improve their soil. They even wrote about the experience below. Look at how much they learnt! They wrote their own instructions for us to share with others. Can you follow their instructions and have a go at making your own hot compost at school? Click on the instructions below to download and print the pdf. Good luck!
