Investigate a Pond
Collect water from a local pond and see what critters are in there. You might be amazed to discover how much life is inside that bucket of water. If you have some little containers, or a fishing tackle box (with little compartments), you can use tweezers to pick up the invertebrates and sort them into containers. Then you can look closely at them with a magnifying glass. Can you work out what they are? You can find a website HERE to help your identify them.
You might find it really interesting to do some research into what they will turn into. You may have larvae of dragonflies or mosquitoes in there. You might even have tadpoles! This will lead into some great learning about life cycles. Have fun investigating!
If you want to take this a step further, click HERE to see how to make a pond in a jar. It is a super cool experiment for at home, or at school. Our friend Krysia, from Taupō for Tomorrow, has put this awesome resource together with everything that you need to know to create your own ecosphere. Have fun and let us know what life you have in your pond in a jar.

Teachers: To take this further as a science investigation, check out the resources available on Science Learning Hub. HERE is one that might be useful. This video is a great video for older children to watch if they are interested in measuring stream health with macro-invertebrates.
