Make a Nature Mobile
Making a nature mobile can be an art activity, a way to display your taonga from a nature walk, or a STEM challenge.
Go on a hunt in nature for interesting items like leaves, pine cones, seed pods, shells, feathers etc. Also collect some sticks to make a frame to hang your collection from.
Tie your sticks together with string to make a cross, or a square frame. Or, you could even just use one stick to hang your items from, and try to get it to balance evenly! Then tie the items that you collected to pieces of string and hang them from your frame.
If you want to only use items from nature, use strips of harakeke (flax) or tīkouka (cabbage tree) leaves instead of string.
Now you have a beautiful mobile made from nature to hang in your home. What a great way to display your natural taonga (treasures) that you’ve collected!
Make it a Challenge!
If you want a challenge, set a task like, “Create a mobile using at least 2 sticks, with at least 8 items from nature hanging from them.” Make it more tricky by not allowing any string, glue or tape! The participants must use only items found in nature. See who can create a mobile that meets the criteria and balances perfectly in the time allocated. What a great team building activity for camp!
