Find Different Shapes in Nature
This Nature Connector encourages us to really focus on the objects around us and look at nature through new eyes. It's all about finding different shapes in nature. What shapes can you find in different plants, birds, bugs and more?
For a quick, easy nature activity, download and print the scavenger hunt. Work together to find the shapes, or make it a competition! Tick the shapes as you find them.
Geometry task: Ask children to brainstorm the shapes that they know and to draw these shapes on a piece of paper. Older children could think of 3D shapes such as cube, cone, sphere, rectangular prism. Discuss the shapes, their names, their attributes, and how to draw them. Then get the children to take their piece of paper outside to find the shapes in nature. Looking for the shapes in small groups will lead to more valuable discussion while on the scavenger hut.
Extra activity: Take photos of the shapes that you find and make a poster or pic collage with them.
Learn Te Reo! Below you will see this scavenger hunt with the shapes written in Te Reo Māori. We also have a full immersion Te Reo Māori version here.
