Get to Know a Tree
Head into your backyard, school field, or local green space and choose a tree or group of trees to observe. Spend time watching your tree closely. Give it a hug!
This activity is inspired by one on the DOC home learning page:
What creatures can you spot in this tree? Can you notice any insects, spiders, or other bugs? Look under loose bark and under leaves. If you find any think about why they are there. Why did they choose that spot as their home? What birds can you spot in the tree? Can you see any nests?
Look around the base of the tree and on the bark for fungi and lichen. To learn more about lichen check out our Lichen Scavenger Hunt. To learn more about fungi, check out our Fungi Scavenger Hunt.
Watch your tree over a period of time. What changes do you see happening? What creatures come visiting? Who/what uses the tree? Think about what changes you might see as the seasons change.
Research and find out what kind of tree it is. Is it a native species or introduced species? If it is an exotic species, why was it introduced? Where did it come from? What special features does it have?

Enjoying spending time with your special tree!
