Why Connect Kids with Nature?
Why should we connect tamariki with nature? Connecting to nature is important for our mental and physical well-being. It is a great way to reduce stress, anxiety and pain. Nature helps us to feel calm, peaceful, and happy. We all know how important it is to learn through authentic contexts and to engage tamariki in hands on learning. We can learn so much through nature connection; life cycles, the water cycle, all about flora and fauna, biodiversity, conservation… the list is endless!
Research is showing that connecting to nature is more important now than ever, particularly if we want to make our planet a better place. In order to fix the climate crisis and the biodiversity crisis, we need people to feel so connected to nature, that they feel a part of nature. To do this we need to take time to pause and engage our senses and emotions when in nature, find beauty in our surroundings and make meaning from it. Hopefully, this will lead to people feeling compassion for nature, and taking action to help it.
