Collaboration in Term 1
Kids Greening Taupō is well known for its collaboration with other organisations, businesses, and educators to make great experiences happen. This is made possible by being part of the Taupō Environmental Education Collaboratative (EEC). Our lead coordinator, Rachel, was asked to speak about collaboration at a webinar for the New Zealand Association of Environmental Education. You can see the webinar here.
This term we have collaborated with lots of different organisations. Here are a few of them…
We worked with Blue Light Taupō to give a group of Tauhara Primary School students an experience doing some native restoration work and joining in with a Greening Taupō Wicked Weeders session.
Some of our student leaders were ‘model clients’ for an NZOIA (New Zealand Outdoors Instructors Association) Bush Skills assessment. They had a great time exploring around Lake Rotopounamu and learning skills for in the bush. Thank you Blue Light for letting us use the van.
Our Coordinators worked with Field-based STEM to support Ruud Kleinpaste’s lessons at St Patricks School. Then he worked with the class doing biological control work with us and helped them with their project. You can read more about the project here.
We provided activities for the children at the Waipahihi Botanical Reserve’s Music in the Garden’s event. We had scavenger hunts, bug hunts, made magic potions, and got up close with a wēta. Our student leaders organised some activities too. A few weeks later Graeme from the Botanical Reserve Society shared his expertise with our student leaders, showing them how to plant correctly, and we planted native trees in the reserve.
We had a fantastic weeding session with Youthtown, teaching them about native restoration work. They cut and pasted the broom in a restoration planting by AC Baths. They did an amazing job and absolutely nailed the broom. It looked awesome!
