Learning Bioblitz Skills
Our Student Leadership teams were lucky to head out into the field and learn from local ecologist, Alana Delich this term. She kindly ran a mini bioblitz session with our junior student leadership teams down by the Waikato river. We uncovered an old sign for a restoration planting done by Taupo Intermediate School 20 years ago. It was interesting to see how big the trees were, but also how big the weeds were! We had a go at using the inaturalist app to identify the species of plant, birds, fungi and bugs that we found there. The students particularly enjoyed bug hunting and identifying the various critters that they found.
Our Coordinators also had the opportunity to learn about how to do a community bioblitz when they headed to Hamilton to check out The Fairfield Project. Unfortunately, the terrible rain meant that some plans had to change, but we still had lots of fun and learnt a lot. We would like to thank Hamilton City Council and The Fairfield Project for making us feel welcome and sharing their knowledge with us. We learnt a lot that we hope to use for projects in Taupō in the future.
