Broadlands School Native Pathway
This year we added a new school to our list of schools/ECE centres with KGT native restoration plantings. Broadlands School is number 34 on our list! We were super impressed with the school’s beautiful grounds and awesome tamariki.
At the start of the year Broadlands School applied to us for the Contact Energy Take Action Fund. We funded 100 trees for their school grounds and they planned and prepared the planting site.
Our coordinators, Heidi and Rachel, went along for a day and had a session with each class talking to them about why we do restoration planting. We also spoke to them about some of our unique native species and why they are so special.
A group of 10 students became KGT leaders for the day. After a training session with us, they were able to show all of the other students in the school how to plant, one class at a time. By the last session, they could even teach the students about our unique native plant species. Their leadership skills were incredible! It was great to see tuakana-teina learning taking place and to see the awesome native walkway along the back of the school become established.
We had a fantastic day and hope to be back next year.
Thanks Contact Energy and The Possum for funding the plants for this project.
