Northwood Kindergarten in Brentwood Gully
Northwood Kindergarten is situated on the road above Brentwood Gully. They have windows that look out over the gully and have been using it as a learning space for the past 3 years. Originally, they were invited to join St Patrick’s School Taupō with their plantings in the gully, but then they decided to become kaitiaki of the gully themselves. You can read more about their work in the gully with St Patrick’s School here.
The tamariki have enjoyed many kindergarten trips into the gully supported by our coordinator, Rachel. They love checking the traps, weeding around their trees, planting more native trees, potting up seedlings, bug hunting, bird spotting, rolling down the hill, doing scavenger hunts, and even having a picnic some times. The fortnightly gully trips have become something that the tamariki really look forward to.
This year they applied to the Contact Energy Take Action Fund for a wagon to take on their trips. They love taking it with them, loaded up with plants, spades, bug hunting gear, and other goodies. It sometimes comes back to kindergarten loaded up with treasures to share with their friends such as rotten logs, feathers, interesting bugs, sticks, flowers, or even seedlings to pot up and grow.
The tamariki have enjoyed becoming kaitiaki of this space and they love checking the trapline and resetting traps. They have an amazing knowledge of the gully and know where all of the traps are. They know where the plants are that they have planted and they like to check on how they are going and weed around them. It has been fantastic to see some of their little seedlings grow into trees over the past three years. They hope to continue to use the space and to improve it for the rest of the community.
