Mulch Around Plants
Did you know that after planting a restoration area it will take 3-5 years for that site to be able to survive on its own? For those first few years it is really important to water, weed and mulch the site if possible.
Mulch is important for lots of reasons:
It helps suppress weeds that may compete with the plant for nutrients, water, and space.
It helps protect the plant from the cold.
It helps the soil around the plant to retain moisture, reducing the need to water.
It helps slow run off during heavy rain.
When it breaks down, it helps build soil structure and provides nutrients.
It makes the site look good! If the site looks well cared for other people are more likely to respect the plants.
How do we mulch around young trees?
Pull out any weeds around the tree, being careful to not disturb the roots of the tree.
Tip a bucket of mulch beside the tree
Carefully form the mulch into a doughnut shape around the tree
Ensure that it is pulled away from the stem of the tree. If it is touching it, it can rot the stem.
HERE is a good video about why we mulch and the different types of mulch.
