Taupō Mulching Events
About 300 students joined us at the planting site on Crown Road to help release the plants from grass and weeds, then spread mulch around them. It was hard work on a site that big to lug around buckets full of mulch on a hot day, and these tamariki did an amazing job. Thank you Tauhara Primary School, Taupo and Taupo Intermediate School!
The following week, awesome tamariki from Mountview School and Taupō Kids Community spread mulch around our Greening Taupō Day planting site on Tauhara Road. These students have given these plants a good chance of surviving the spring onslaught of weeds and the hot summer. The mulch will also decompose to give the plants nutrients and help them to grow.
Thank you so much to the Taupō EEC team for scooping hundreds of ice creams for all the hard workers too! Jenni from Waikato Enviroschools and Shannon from Taupō District Council you are awesome!
The international students from Taupo-nui-a-Tia College also gave back to the place that has become their home this year by mulching one of our newly planted areas. Our coordinator, Rachel, also spoke to them about New Zealand's biodiversity crisis and why our animals here are so vulnerable. She explained the vision of Greening Taupō and why we plant native trees. They were excited to contribute and hope they can come back in 10 years time to see that it has grown into a real native forest.
Thanks so much to all of the wonderful tamariki who have helped us mulch this term. It really is important mahi that will contribute to the success of the projects.
